Lisa Thornton Launches Independent Campaign for Churchlands (13 Dec 2024)

Lisa Thornton has officially launched her campaign as an independent candidate for the WA state electorate of Churchlands, offering voters a genuine community-focused alternative to party politics.

Ms Thornton has been asked to run by grassroots group, Churchlands Independent, part of a growing community independent movement that is effecting 'bottom-up democracy' where community comes first, not career or party interests.

As a long-serving City of Stirling Councillor and Doubleview resident, Lisa has spent years working closely with her local community, advocating for solutions on issues ranging from planning and development to local business matters and environmental protection.

With a background in science, small business and education, she brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of consistently championing the issues that matter most to local residents.

“I’m running for Churchlands because our community deserves a representative who listens, acts and puts people first,” Ms Thornton said.

“As an independent, I’m free from party politics and vested interests, which means I can focus 100% of my efforts on delivering for the people of Churchlands.”

Her key priorities include:

  • Development:  Advocating for community interests in decision-making, including a third-party right of appeal and to ensure community benefits are commensurate with development incentives given to commercial developers.
  • Environment and Climate:  Safeguarding Churchlands’ natural spaces, tree canopy and biodiversity while championing practical action on climate change.
  • Integrity in Politics: Reducing conflicts of interest by banning donations from property developers and implementing a voluntary donor wall on her website in real-time so it is clear who is backing her.
  • Housing: Action to address the shortage of social and affordable housing.

"The electorate of Churchlands has a history of strong and independent representation, with Independent MP Dr Liz Constable holding the seat for 17 of its 28 year history."

“Churchlands' residents understand the value of an independent voice that isn’t tied to party agendas. I’m ready to stand up as this independent voice for our community without fear or favour,” she said.

Ms Thornton said she is ready to listen to the people of Churchlands to genuinely bring honesty and an unwavering focus on their behalf to WA Parliament.

“This is our chance to create something new—a politics that works for the community, not just party machines. Together, we can make Churchlands a model again for independent, community-first representation,” she said.
